How to build and manage great teams

If you’ve never been responsible for creating a winning team before, it may be difficult to determine where to start. If you’re already responsible for creating teams, it’s never a bad idea to strengthen your skills. There’s always room for improvement, and changing the way you approach team building can help you create a group of rockstars who operate with superior productivity. Here’s how to build and manage a great team.

Become a Better Communicator

The best way to get things done is to communicate clearly. Miscommunication can result in a significant loss of productivity, and you won’t find out until it’s too late. An environment that fosters great communication allows everyone involved to use their voices. It’s worth noting that great communication is only rooted half in verbal skills – the ability to be a great listener is equally as important in a successful exchange of information. If your team is hybrid or fully remote, this is more important than ever.

Improve Your Education

As industries continue to evolve and innovation plays a bigger role in our everyday jobs, it’s important to brush up on the latest tools and resources that have been created to improve your workflow. For instance, our leadership training can provide you with the tools you need to upskill as quickly as possible. Optimizing your candidate selection process can minimise turnover while helping you find and retain employees who will learn and grow with you.

Aim for Diversity

The best team isn’t a group of “yes” people who are all willing to roll with the punches. That might make things easier, but it deprives the team of the necessary opportunity for innovative thinking. Choosing team members with a diverse variety of experience and special skills will always be the way to go. They may bump heads occasionally, but in the end, all of their individual kinds of expertise will come together to create a dream team. It also makes it easier to delegate tasks when you can assign them according to the strengths of individuals.

Facilitate Collaboration

When you’re responsible for managing a great team, one of your biggest responsibilities is to assure that everyone is collaborating productively. Collaboration can be tricky. A lot of compromises will be made, and it’s up to you to determine what the best compromises will be. In the end, it comes down to creating a plan that’s functional and productive while utilising the skills of every team member to the fullest of their abilities.

Be a Supportive Leader

A supportive leader is willing to work just as hard as the team members. People don’t feel inspired by a leader who assigns projects and seemingly disappears. You do have work to do behind the scenes, but you need to make sure your team members understand what you’re doing to further the progress of the project. Another thing supportive leaders do is avoid pointing the finger at team members when things go wrong – a great leader will accept responsibility for all of the final choices that are made, even if they are unsuccessful.

You may need to work out a few kinks along the way, but you’re only a few steps away from creating a team that’s better than you could have ever imagined. Always keep your eye on the end goal, and be willing to entertain innovative solutions that can put you on the road to success.
